There are three buildings to choose from:

Turrets: Helps eliminate asteroids

Towers: Grants diamonds for every asteroid mineral you've gathered

Crates: Blocks asteroids from reaching the planets

There are scheduled timeskips every minute to help get to Year 9999, so make sure to choose your building placements wisely!
